Facial Feminisation (FFS)

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a set of reconstructive surgical procedures that alter typically male facial features to bring them closer in shape and size to the typical female facial features. FFS can include various bony and soft tissue procedures such as brow lift, rhinoplasty and lip augmentation. Julie will only administer non-surgical treatments for you and can certainly provide you advice about cosmetic surgical procedures if requested.

How can non-surgical facial feminization procedures help me as a MTF?

Your facial appearance is an important part of your gender expression. Non-surgical facial feminization procedures are about allowing you to be your authentic self on a more confident level. As a transgender MTF, you may be looking for non-invasive options that allow you to highlight those feminine facial qualities, rejuvenate a more youthful facial appearance and create a softer, less angular facial shape.

What are the classical feminine features?

  • Low straight hairline
  • Short flat forehead
  • High, arched tapered brows
  • Smaller frontal bone bossae (bony distinctions of the forehead)
  • Large eyes that are not deep set
  • Short upper lip, with a well-defined philtrum complex (the part between the nose and bow of the lips)
  • Full everted vermilion lip boarder
  • Wide or narrow cheek and jaw bones
  • A more delicate, smaller nose

How can I make my face look softer?

As a transgendered individual, perhaps nothing is more vital to you than having a body that matches how you feel.

Filling temple depressions

Some men also have shallow depressions in the bone beside their eyes. If the depressions are noticeable, dermal filler can be injected through small entry points in the temple hair to fill them.

Non – surgical rhinoplasty

Male noses are larger and longer, with bulkier tips than a woman’s. They point straight ahead or down, while the ideal female nose is thinner and shorter and sometimes scoops up. The angle at the radix (where the nose meets the forehead) is sharper in males and slopes gently in females. These characteristics can be achieved with surgery, non-surgical procedures or both. Please go to the nose reshaping treatment page to see more about non-surgical rhinoplasty

Changing the shape of the chin

A man’s chin is 17 percent longer than a woman’s and wider as well. A woman’s chin tends to be tapered or oval. Feminization of this part of the face for the best results will most likely require surgery. However, it is possible to have this area of the face treated non-surgically. This is something you can discuss with Julie at the consultation

Jaw Line

The male jaw looks square from the front, but it has a wide, V-shaped bend between the ear and the chin. In contrast, a female jaw has a soft curve from the ear to the chin. The angular male jaw can be rounded by surgery and any other additional tweaks can be achieved with non-surgical treatments.

Diminishing the Adam’s apple

The Adam’s apple is thyroid cartilage that sits on top of the trachea—the breathing tube—and anchors the vocal cords. Both men and women have one, but a man’s is more prominent. It can be reduced through surgery and the procedure is called a tracheal reduction

Raising the cheeks

While rounded cheeks are considered attractive in both men and women, cheek implants are rarely necessary. A combination of facial threading, dermal fillers and Botox (R) can achieve fuller and higher cheeks

Shortening lip height

Men typically have a longer upper-lip area, averaging 21 millimeters in height, compared with 15 millimeters for women. And it gets longer with age. This can be shortened with surgery via a short incision right under the nostrils. Lips can then be filled with dermal fillers to complete the finishing touches
