There was a time when only a surgical facelift or cheek implants could assist with loss of facial volume; now thanks to major medical advances in cosmetic medicine we have a number of highly effective, non-surgical options. As we age our skin loses collagen and fat resulting in a changed facial contour. The cheeks can become hollow, and skin can sag and wrinkle, resulting in an overly-aged, drawn appearance. Other reasons people seek cheek augmentation are to correct flatness, asymmetry, or to improve the overall balance of your facial shape.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is cheek enhancement?

Cheek enhancement is a procedure designed to replace volume loss in the cheeks. As loss of volume causes a flattening out of the mid face, augmentation of the cheeks lifts the area, eliminating sagging and adding youthful definition. There are several different products available for this procedure, but the skill of the practitioner is the real key as there is both an art and a science to cheek augmentation
  • How much dermal filler will I need?

The amount of dermal filler required will vary from person to person, depending on the amount of volume loss to begin with, and the degree of enhancement desired. There is also the option to have longer lasting fillers, but they are slightly more expensive, but can provide better value in the long term. Julie agrees in the less is more approach and this has proved popular with her clients
  • What are the advantages of cheek enhancement?

One of the main advantages of treating the cheeks is that the treatment lifts the entire face as well as reducing the nasolabial lines and jowls. The shape of the face can be reverted to a youthful 'upside down triangle' with cheek fillers from a more square shaped face. Generally, the tear troughs should be treated simultaneously with the cheeks, to ensure a smooth transition from this area into the cheeks. Julie will discuss these options with you
  • What happens during the consultation?

Julie will assess your facial structure, discussing expectations with you and determine which product and concentration will work best for your facial shape. If there is a specific dermal filler you have had before or are used to a certain brand just, let Julie know and she will order this for you from the cosmetic pharmacy in London. As a patient you can be involved with the treatment as much or as little as you wish
  • Does it hurt?

Julie uses a topical numbing cream and there is also a mild anesthetic that is added to the dermal filler. The injections are done a few at a time. Don't forget there is more padding in this area so you have less chance of feeling discomfort. There isn’t any recovery period required you can carry on with your day to day activities. You might have a little swelling afterwards, but the gel soon dissipates into the surrounding areas so it’ll look and feel completely natural. When the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience a dull ache for the first few hours or days and you are can take regular paracetamol during this period
  • What results can I expect?

The skilled, precise injection of dermal filler around the cheek area gently lifts and rounds them and gives them back their prominence in balance with the rest of the face
  • What happens straight afterwards?

After the treatment the area may be a bit red and swollen. The effects of the swelling can take up to a week to resolve although the majority of the swelling should start to resolve within a couple of days during which time you are advised to sleep on your back with an extra couple of pillows. There may also be some bruising associated with the treatment, but everyone's healing process is different.
  • Can I use makeup after the treatment?

Julie advisees her clients to use mineral makeup where possible or Lycogel camouflage make up. Lycogel will counteract heat sensation, reduce swelling and will camouflage any bruising and/or redness resulting from the procedure. This will enable you to continue with your normal daily activities. Lycogel can also be use as your everyday foundation as it will keep your face protected with non-paraben SPF 30.
